Archemix Names Errol De Souza President and CEO



CAMBRIDGE, MASS

Archemix, a developer of nucleic acids for use as drugs and as tools for drug discovery and development, said it has appointed Errol De Souza as president and CEO. Mr. De Souza joins from Synaptic Pharmaceutical, where he served as president and CEO prior to its sale to Danish drug maker H. Lundbeck last month, in a deal valued at $122 million. He replaces founding president and CEO Martin Stanton, who remains with the company as executive vice president.

Prior to joining Synaptic, Mr. De Souza served as senior vice president and U.S. head of drug innovation and approval at Aventis. He previously served as a co-founder and executive vice president of research and development of Neurocrine Biosciences. Prior to joining industry, Mr. De Souza was chief of the laboratory of neurobiology at the National Institute on Drug Abuse and on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Archemix is backed by $51.75 million in Series A financing. The company's investors include Atlas Venture, Care Capital, MDS Capital, Posco BioVentures,Prospect Venture Partners, Rho Ventures, Schroder Ventures Life Sciences, and U.S. Trust Private Equity.
