LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of optical wireless products
based on free-space optics (FSO) technology, today announced that
the Landratsamt Main-Tauber-Kreis District Office in southwest Germany
has deployed a VoIP network via multiple optical wireless connections.
The German government agency's wireless VoIP network includes five
LightPointe optical wireless links that integrate the voice and data
services for various satellite offices into the main district office.
The mission-critical point-to-point network connections support key
government functions, including health services, youth welfare, and
forestry commission. The optical wireless network covers a one-kilometer
radius near Stuttgart. Landratsamt Main-Tauber-Kreis District Office
provides government services for more than 135,000 residents.
The government agency selected LightPointe's optical wireless products
after reviewing several fixed-line and wireless alternatives. The
optical wireless network was configured and deployed in only two days
at a substantial cost-savings over the competing solutions. The network
provides secure, high-bandwidth capacity and fixed-line voice call
quality with no jitter or latency. The new network also eliminates
the need for duplicative voice telephone equipment in multiple offices
and provides full-duplex 155-megabit connections to each of the five
remote offices.
"If you compare the one-off investments made with the costs of
a conventional solution involving line rental and leasing charges
for five new telephone systems -- not forgetting modem lines for the
time recording terminals, plus central administration -- you could
say that the investment has already paid for itself," said Dietmar
Hirsch, IT manager at the Landratsamt Main-Tauber District Office.
LightPointe was the only solutions provider to offer the flexibility,
security and overall performance required for a wireless VoIP network.
Landratsamt Main-Tauber-Kreis District deployed a combination of two
LightPointe optical wireless system models, the FlightLite 155 and
FlightSpectrum 155. The outdoor point-to-point systems allow all staff
members in five remote offices of the government agency to access
centralised data such as up-to-date management information, and the
systems enable voice telephone calls via the same wireless network.
"One of the key benefits of optical wireless systems is the ability
to carry both voice and data traffic simultaneously," said Bob
Preston, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for LightPointe.
"Our optical wireless full-duplex throughput rates and multiple-beam
architecture provides an unrivalled combination of performance and
availability for VoIP networks, data-only networks or converged voice
and data networks."
The VoIP integration of the Main-Tauber wireless network -- part of
a regional government mandate -- has proven itself as a prime example
of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The ability to run both data
traffic and voice traffic over the LightPointe optical wireless links
also ensures that the network can scale to meet future bandwidth demands.
